Conversational Chinese Course
The Conversational Chinese course is designed for students who would like to boost oral Chinese skills.
Enrol this course if you:
- Have some basic knowledge of Chinese, but are not confident in communicating with native speakers;
- Have a high level of literacy but lag behind in listening and speaking skills;
- Have completed the Beginner Chinese course and would like to focus on improving speaking skills.
What to expect
The course is utilised the task-based language learning pedagogy that embeds the real-world communication task into the classroom settings to facilitate communication needs. Based on the Task-based language learning method, each unit covers three main phase: Pre-task, Task Cycle, Review and assessments. Through classroom input (Pre-task) on relevant topics, students learn more authentic oral expressions and a wider range of vocabulary. Completing the Task Cycle in class will help students to feel more confident in applying the vocabulary to real-life contexts.
Depending on your level, the following topic will be brought to the class:
Level 1 : Get ready
Level 1 is aimed at beginner Chinese learners with a literacy level of 250-300 characters. It includes 15 lessons on 5 daily topics, such as greetings, shopping, asking for directions, expressing dates, etc. The design of the materials relies on a task-based language teaching framework to help learners continue the wheel of speech based on a recap of existing knowledge and to achieve simple daily conversations with native speakers.
Level 2: Converse with native speaker with daily topics
Building on Level 1, Level 2 introduces a broader range of daily topics. In total there are 4 topics and 10 lessons, which These topics include hobbies, appointments, travel and medical appointments. On completion of Level 2, learners can expect to be able to conduct daily conversations with native speakers.
Level 3: Move to formal
Level 3 is aimed at intermediate learners and gradually moves from informal, everyday topics to formal topics. At this level, students will discuss topics that are personally relevant and of general interest, such as habits, housing, careers, etc.
Level 4: Cross the gap to intermediate level
Level 4 continues the framework of Level 3 and helps learners to cross the gap to intermediate level. In addition to more formal topics, learners are required to narrate experiences in different tenses through different forms of tasks, such as conversations, simulations and performances.
Level 5 : Produce expressions of paragraph
Level 5 is aimed at intermediate learners and consists of 15 lessons. Most of the topics are more formal and cover topics of interest in today's society, such as culture, life, education and food. From Level 5 onwards, students should be able to string together multiple sentences to produce longer paragraph-length expressions.
Level 6: Express yourself
Level 6 covers social topics such as the world economy, environmental protection, tradition and modernity, and science, introducing reading material of some difficulty and guiding students through discussions and negotiations to complete class tasks, where learners can discuss widely and fully, express their own views and argue for or against the issues given.
